Sun Tunnels 2026

A friend of mine has wanted to visit a sculpture in the western Utah desert for years now. Well, 2026 was the year we finally made it happen.

We rented a Jeep and set off for the desert.

Sun Tunnels (1973–1976) is a piece of land art by Nancy Holt. It consists of four pipes that align with the sunrise and sunset during summer and winter solstice.

It's hard to imagine an angle of this one that hasn't been photographed before, but I found some enjoyment in observing the small gathering of people who had gone out of their way to witness this unique event.

My friend rented a 600mm lens, in which I took great delight. He couldn't get far enough away to take full advantage, but he captured me at 330mm enjoying a Onewheel ride across the expansive desert valley.

I've developed a great love for wide open, remote, flat expanses of wilderness, so this trip was a special treat for me. It made me want to seek more time in such places.

I'm trying to become more ok with including people in my architecture photography. Not sure whether I like the Salt Flats image better with or without them.
